In a bid to enhance the doubles game for fans, players, and tournaments, the ATP has launched a doubles trial at the Mutua Madrid Open. The initiative aims to create new narratives and storylines, improve the on-site experience, and enhance the broadcast product. The changes include more Singles vs. Doubles action, a streamlined schedule over five days, and a reduced shot clock.
The ATP is also implementing changes to speed up doubles matches. The time between points is being reduced to 15 seconds after short rallies and 25 seconds after longer ones. This move is part of a broader effort to enhance the fan experience with quicker changeovers and allowing fan movement during play.
Matthew Ebden, ATP Player Advisory Council President, has voiced his support for these changes. He believes that these modifications will elevate the sport and provide a more engaging and dynamic experience for fans. The ATP's innovative approach to the doubles game is a testament to their commitment to continually improving the sport and delivering an exciting product for fans, players, and tournaments alike.
